How about providing an email alias service so people can have a "user@grid.org" email address. We could have a participant point requriement to make it an incentive for people to contribute.
It might be easier to make the Drupal users get their email accounts under a subdomain, like nickname@users.grid.org for example. Currently the main @grid.org domain is being handled by the corporate mail server, which would be cumbersome and labor intensive to add large numbers of users.
Maybe a subdomain?
