General Electric Co.'s research division said it had developed data-storage technology
using holograms that could store the content of 100 standard DVDs on a
single disc.
GE said its microholographic material can support 500 gigabytes of
data in a standard DVD-size disc, equivalent to 20 single-layer Blu-ray
discs. GE plans to license the technology to other companies that would
produce the disc and players and expects products based on the
technology to be available in 2012.
